Main factors that negatively affect kiwis
Why kiwis can survive months at sea during shipping, but become soft and spoil in just a few days after entering cold rooms?
During shipping kiwis don’t come in contact with any other fruit. As kiwis are very sensitive to ethylene, it becomes a challenge for companies that import multiple fruit items to keep kiwis free of ethylene when stored together with ethylene emitting fruits.
Miatech’s Bio Turbo technology can remove ethylene from the storage atmosphere and kill up to 99,5% of airborne pathogens.
How to store kiwi with no ethylene and airborne pathogens
Kelvin Leong is a Malaysian fruit importer of citrus, kiwis, apples and several other fruit items. Some time ago he installed a Miatech Bio Turbo system in his storage room for citrus. After experiencing excellent results, he decided to do the same in his kiwi cold room.
With the Bio Turbo, Mr. Leong was able to solve the challenge of kiwi’s becoming soft before reaching retail shelves. Ethylene gases coming from neighboring cold rooms where apples or pears are stored was now being instantly removed before it became harmful to the kiwi fruits. Now he keeps his kiwis fresh and firm for as long as needed in order to deliver fresh fruits to his customers.
All Zespri kiwi fruits in the Philippines will be protected by Miatech’s Bio Turbo
Elite Fruit Marketing is one of the largest fruit importing companies in the Philippines. Since December 2016 they own 16 Bio Turbo 1000 units, which cover all medium size cold rooms in their distribution center in Manila. This year they plan to import a larger volume of kiwi fruits from New Zealand. As the exclusive distributor of Zespri kiwis in the Philippines, they serve the kiwi demand of the entire nation. For this reason, they have prepared two larger cold rooms and installed a Bio Turbo 6000 in each of them.
Mr. Kingson Chan (photo), the owner of the company, told us: “Importing and distributing fruits is a risky business. The Zespri kiwis come all the way from New Zealand by ocean freight. These are delicate fruit items which start to ripen at the moment they arrive at our cold rooms. Having them distributed in optimal condition to our customers throughout the country is a battle against time. Kiwis are climacteric fruits and therefore very sensitive to ethylene. We have used Miatech’s Bio Turbo technology the last two years and have seen amazing results on all our fruits. With the new addition of the two larger Bio Turbo 6000 models, we will be able to store all our Zespri kiwis in ideal conditions, free of ethylene and airborne pathogens.”
